But did you also know that they are bad for your poker game?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Let's get right into it:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;Pride&lt;/span&gt; is the excessive belief in one's own abilities and it has been called the sin from which all others arise. There are few poker mistakes that can't be traced back to pride. Playing above your bankroll - Pride. Trying to buy a pot against fish because you're a tight player - Pride. Fancy Play Syndrome - Pride. Playing hands out of position because you think you can make them work - Pride. Calling down with a beaten hand so people won't think you're weak - Pride. If I could get rid of one fault from my game, it would be pride.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;Envy&lt;/span&gt; - Envy the desire for others' traits, status, abilities, or situation. I am not Daniel Negreanu, nor am I Phil Hellmuth. No matter how much I envy them their successes, trying to blindly copy them is not the right thing to do. I'm not saying don't try to play like Daniel (or even Phil). Instead, understand *how* Daniel uses his traits to gain his successes. If Joe WSOP comes over the top with J7o, don't you do the same out of envy, in fact you don't do it until you know how and why it worked for him and that it will work for you.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;Gluttony&lt;/span&gt; - While poker food is pretty sinful in terms of its health effects, that's not the only bad thing about it. Gluttony is a desire to consume more than one needs. In other words, hanging on at the trough too long. Even if it's the fishiest game ever, if you're too drunk or tired to realise that there are three hearts on the board, then you are comitting the sin of gluttony, and your eternal bankroll will suffer.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style=";font-family:verdana;font-size:100%;" &gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;Lust&lt;/span&gt; - There's an obvious joke about not surfing for porn while playing online. I guess the closest I can come to an actual piece of poker advice is that even if she bats her eyelashes at you, you should still check-raise a woman, and especially a "woman" whenever you can get her to semi-bluff into your strong hands. If you're playing poker for money, then everyone is fair game, and should be played hard. Otherwise, you get sloppy.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;Anger&lt;/span&gt; - The sin of anger is obvious in poker, so too are its negative effects. Anger is the father of tilt. We all know what tilt looks like, even if we can't recognise it in ourselves. When the poker player allows his anger to rule his head, he throws his money away. Thoughts like "I'll teach this jerk a lesson" or "how could he call with 92 off?" are angry thoughts and remove the player from the path of righteousness and profit.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;Greed&lt;/span&gt; - Ahh sweet greed. Perhaps the second most deadly of the Poker sins. Greed is what makes us play too many hands - blinded by the potential payoff. Greed is what makes us ignore signs we are beaten, and call one more bet. Greed is what makes us check our top set in late position with a two flush on the flop because we want to try for a check-raise. That said, a tempered amount of greed can be a good thing - we wants the precious after all, don't we Gollum?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;Sloth&lt;/span&gt; is the avoidance of physical or spiritual work - If you're pretending to be a (semi)-pro, you've got to work. The serious poker player must work both physically - putting the hours in at the tables, even when Survivor is on TV and spiritually - reading and thinking about their play, working out what their sins are and trying to solve them.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;So there, I guess Religious Education class wasn't just a chance to play cards in the back row.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:100%;"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:100%;"&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;a href="http://www.cashyourbonus.com"&gt;Poker bonus - Cash your bonus!&lt;/a&gt;&lt;div class="blogger-post-footer"&gt;&lt;img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/6910999246907553891-3522386208635490270?l=allthatspoker.blogspot.com' alt='' /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;</content><link rel='replies' type='application/atom+xml' href='http://allthatspoker.blogspot.com/feeds/3522386208635490270/comments/default' title='Post Comments'/><link rel='replies' type='text/html' href='http://www.blogger.com/comment.g?blogID=6910999246907553891&amp;postID=3522386208635490270&amp;isPopup=true' title='1 Comments'/><link rel='edit' type='application/atom+xml' href='http://www.blogger.com/feeds/6910999246907553891/posts/default/3522386208635490270'/><link rel='self' type='application/atom+xml' href='http://www.blogger.com/feeds/6910999246907553891/posts/default/3522386208635490270'/><link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://allthatspoker.blogspot.com/2009/06/seven-deadly-sins-of-poker.html' title='The Seven Deadly Sins of Poker'/><author><name>Poker Invest</name><uri>http://www.blogger.com/profile/06448107214341041070</uri><email>noreply@blogger.com</email><gd:image rel='http://schemas.google.com/g/2005#thumbnail' width='16' height='16' src='http://img2.blogblog.com/img/b16-rounded.gif'/></author><thr:total>1</thr:total></entry><entry><id>tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6910999246907553891.post-3465912297188832017</id><published>2009-05-28T01:37:00.000-07:00</published><updated>2009-05-29T00:47:43.555-07:00</updated><category scheme='http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#' term='300'/><category scheme='http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#' term='super'/><category scheme='http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#' term='full'/><category scheme='http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#' term='sit and go'/><category scheme='http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#' term='tournament poker'/><category scheme='http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#' term='tilt'/><category scheme='http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#' term='holdem'/><category scheme='http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#' term='turbo'/><title type='text'>$15 NL 9 man SNG Win Super TURBO (300 chips) at Full Tilt (May 27th 2009)</title><content type='html'>This is a SUPER TURBO SNG at &lt;a href="http://www.fulltiltpoker.com"&gt;Full Tilt&lt;/a&gt;.&lt;br /&gt;Every player starts with 300 chips and blinds increase every 3 minutes.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;object width="425" height="344"&gt;&lt;param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/nOMtRCr_Jq0&amp;amp;hl=en&amp;amp;fs=1&amp;amp;rel=0"&gt;&lt;param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"&gt;&lt;param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"&gt;&lt;embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/nOMtRCr_Jq0&amp;amp;hl=en&amp;amp;fs=1&amp;amp;rel=0" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"&gt;&lt;/embed&gt;&lt;/object&gt;&lt;center&gt;&lt;a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://affiliates.ultimatebet.com/banners/redirect.php?id=392&amp;amp;cmpgn_id=83842&amp;amp;prdct_id=1&amp;amp;cat_cd=AP"&gt;&lt;img style="cursor: pointer; Behaviour</title><content type='html'>You might think that starting hand strategy in poker is all about getting big cards and winning with them, but that's only half the story. The other half of the story is avoiding getting yourself into situations where you call down with weak cards.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;If you've played poker already, you'll probably nod your head in agreement when you hear this situation:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;You're in the Big Blind and you catch top pair on the flop with a weak kicker. A player bets, and you call the flop with your top pair. The player bets both the turn and river, and you call again (even when you really don't want to). When you turn your cards over, you find to your dismay that your opponent has a bigger kicker and wins the pot. You've just been out-kicked! This happens all the time and the key is to let it happen to your opponents - not you!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Remember: &lt;a href="http://allthatspoker.blogspot.com/2009/05/position-position-position.html"&gt;Position&lt;/a&gt; is extremely important. Sometimes even more important than the cards you are holding.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div style="text-align: center;"&gt;&lt;a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://www.internettexasholdem.com/texas-holdem-odds-calculator/starting-hand-chart/poker-blinds-odds-chart.gif"&gt;&lt;img style="cursor: pointer; width: 405px; height: 574px;" src="http://www.internettexasholdem.com/texas-holdem-odds-calculator/starting-hand-chart/poker-blinds-odds-chart.gif" alt="" border="0" /&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_m57ggHQaxBE/ShVvoNTE6PI/AAAAAAAAAOw/NGRKRf1KB_E/s1600-h/poker-blinds-odds-chart1.gif"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;center&gt;&lt;a href="http://www.pokerpages.com" title="Poker News, Articles, Tournaments, Freeplay, Results, Directory"&gt;&lt;img src="http://www.pokerpages.com/images/banners/468pokerpages.gif" border="0" alt="Poker News, Articles, Tournaments, Freeplay, Results, Directory" width="400" height="60"&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;/center&gt;&lt;div class="blogger-post-footer"&gt;&lt;img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/6910999246907553891-4557571529044739203?l=allthatspoker.blogspot.com' alt='' /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;</content><link rel='replies' type='application/atom+xml' href='http://allthatspoker.blogspot.com/feeds/4557571529044739203/comments/default' title='Post Comments'/><link rel='replies' type='text/html' href='http://www.blogger.com/comment.g?blogID=6910999246907553891&amp;postID=4557571529044739203&amp;isPopup=true' title='0 Comments'/><link rel='edit' type='application/atom+xml' href='http://www.blogger.com/feeds/6910999246907553891/posts/default/4557571529044739203'/><link rel='self' type='application/atom+xml' href='http://www.blogger.com/feeds/6910999246907553891/posts/default/4557571529044739203'/><link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://allthatspoker.blogspot.com/2009/05/starting-hands-behaviour.html' title='Starting Hands &amp; Behaviour'/><author><name>Poker Invest</name><uri>http://www.blogger.com/profile/06448107214341041070</uri><email>noreply@blogger.com</email><gd:image rel='http://schemas.google.com/g/2005#thumbnail' width='16' height='16' src='http://img2.blogblog.com/img/b16-rounded.gif'/></author><thr:total>0</thr:total></entry><entry><id>tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6910999246907553891.post-3165195445486000712</id><published>2009-05-21T04:46:00.000-07:00</published><updated>2010-04-06T03:11:57.182-07:00</updated><category scheme='http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#' term='tournament poker'/><category scheme='http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#' term='raise'/><category scheme='http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#' term='high stakes poker'/><category scheme='http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#' term='position'/><title type='text'>Position, position, position</title><content type='html'>Your position at the poker table during a hand should have a big influence on the way you play any hand. Your position can determine how much money you win, or even whether or not you actually win the hand. Position in poker is something that is all too often overlooked by newcomers to the game, and sometimes even by some of the more experienced players. To become a solid player, you have to exercise good poker &lt;a href="http://allthatspoker.blogspot.com/2009/05/strategy-multi-table-mtt-tournaments-as.html"&gt;strategy&lt;/a&gt; and use position to your advantage. If you are not always trying to keep aware of your position at the table, then you are leaving a big hole in your game.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;a href="http://www.pokerstars.com/?source=10176865"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;img style="width: 400px; height: 64px;" src="http://www.pokerstars.com/euro_bnrs/euro_current/468x60.gif" /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Your position in each hand is determined by the placement of the ‘button’. The ‘button’ is the dealer’s seat and all actions must take place one after another in an anticlockwise motion from player to player, starting with the player to the immediate left of the dealer. The group of players that will be the first few to act on each betting round are known as players in ‘early position’, and therefore the players that will be the last few to act on each round are known as the players in ‘late position’. As you might have already guessed, the players in between these two groups are known as players in ‘middle position’. The button is the best seat in the hand because that player will be acting last on every round of the hand, except only for pre-flop.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The players that are in late position have an advantage over the other players at the table because they will be the last to act on every betting round. This means that they are able to see how their opponents act and play their hand before they have to decide how to play their own hand. For example, if a player in late position sees an opponent check before them, they can infer that there opponent has a weak hand, and so they may decide to make a bluff to try and take down the pot. If the positions had been switched around however, the player now in early position will have a harder time trying to run a successful bluff, because they no longer have any information on the strength of their opponent’s hand. Being out of position in any hand can cause many problems, and hinder any good Texas Holdem strategy you might posses.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;a href="http://www.partypoker.com/td/new_table/03983_UK_usd_PP_NewTable_LP.htm?wm=3155788" target="_blank"&gt;&lt;img src="http://banners.partypartners.com/images/marketing-materials/partypoker/english/gif/468x60/newtable_500DollarBonus/468x60_gif_newtable.gif" alt="Gif Banners" border="0" width="410" height="60" /&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div style="text-align: center;"&gt;Use PartyPoker BONUS CODE: &lt;span style="color: rgb(204, 0, 0); font-weight: bold;"&gt;DAVID500&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;When deciding whether or not to enter a pot you should always be considering your position at the table. If you are one of the first to act you have to remember that your opponents will have access to more information about your hand on each betting round, and so will be able to have the greater ability to bluff you off of your hand if you show any weakness. Knowing how to bluff in poker is important, but even more important is knowing when to bluff. If you intend to play a hand from early position, you should make sure it is a premium hand to give yourself the best chance of winning. Consequently, you can loosen up your &lt;a href="http://allthatspoker.blogspot.com/2009/05/aa-vs-kk.html"&gt;starting hand&lt;/a&gt; requirements in the later positions because you will have the advantage of acting last on each round.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;a href="http://www.texasholdemclub.net/" title="Free Online Poker"&gt;Free Online Poker&lt;/a&gt; - Play free texas holdem poker just for fun at Texas Holdem Club.&lt;div class="blogger-post-footer"&gt;&lt;img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/6910999246907553891-3165195445486000712?l=allthatspoker.blogspot.com' alt='' /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;</content><link rel='replies' type='application/atom+xml' href='http://allthatspoker.blogspot.com/feeds/3165195445486000712/comments/default' title='Post Comments'/><link rel='replies' type='text/html' href='http://www.blogger.com/comment.g?blogID=6910999246907553891&amp;postID=3165195445486000712&amp;isPopup=true' title='1 Comments'/><link rel='edit' type='application/atom+xml' href='http://www.blogger.com/feeds/6910999246907553891/posts/default/3165195445486000712'/><link rel='self' type='application/atom+xml' href='http://www.blogger.com/feeds/6910999246907553891/posts/default/3165195445486000712'/><link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://allthatspoker.blogspot.com/2009/05/position-position-position.html' title='Position, position, position'/><author><name>Poker Invest</name><uri>http://www.blogger.com/profile/06448107214341041070</uri><email>noreply@blogger.com</email><gd:image rel='http://schemas.google.com/g/2005#thumbnail' width='16' height='16' src='http://img2.blogblog.com/img/b16-rounded.gif'/></author><thr:total>1</thr:total></entry><entry><id>tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6910999246907553891.post-2700112760014114842</id><published>2009-05-21T00:57:00.000-07:00</published><updated>2009-05-28T09:06:43.050-07:00</updated><category scheme='http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#' term='strategy'/><category scheme='http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#' term='sit and go'/><category scheme='http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#' term='tournament poker'/><category scheme='http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#' term='raising'/><category scheme='http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#' term='winning'/><category scheme='http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#' term='win'/><category scheme='http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#' term='folding'/><title type='text'>$16 NL 9 man Turbo SNG Win (May 20th 2009)</title><content type='html'>This is a Turbo SNG on &lt;a href="http://www.pokerstars.com/"&gt;Pokerstars&lt;/a&gt; where I play as Poker Invest.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;object width="425" height="344"&gt;&lt;param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/uT-VaTbujhM&amp;amp;hl=en&amp;amp;fs=1"&gt;&lt;param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"&gt;&lt;param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"&gt;&lt;embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/uT-VaTbujhM&amp;amp;hl=en&amp;amp;fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"&gt;&lt;/embed&gt;&lt;/object&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;a href="http://www.partypoker.com/td/new_table/03983_UK_usd_PP_NewTable_LP.htm?wm=3155788" target="_blank"&gt;&lt;img src="http://banners.partypartners.com/images/marketing-materials/partypoker/english/gif/468x60/newtable_500DollarBonus/468x60_gif_newtable.gif" alt="Gif Banners" border="0" width="410" height="60" /&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;div style="text-align: center;"&gt;$500 BONUS. If you figure that your draw will be the best hand if you hit it, just compare the odds below to the odds the pot is giving you to decide if you’re making a mathematically sound play.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The odds below are separated into preflop and postflop sections and while some are essential, some were just thrown in for fun. You will run into this situation often at the table, so get into the habit of comparing the actual odds of making your hand against the pot odds. Of course, in No-Limit games you should often also consider the implied odds (the amount of money that you expect to make from your opponent after you make your hand), but that is the subject of another article.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;If I recommend that you memorize a vital statistic, it will be bolded and you will run into it frequently playing hold’em. In parenthesis, the probability will be expressed in percentages to the nearest tenth.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:100%;"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;span style=";font-family:Arial;font-size:100%;" &gt;&lt;u&gt;&lt;b&gt;Preflop Odds&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/u&gt;&lt;br /&gt;These odds won’t really affect your game strategy, but it’s interesting to see how rare certain premium cars are. It’s also important to realize that many players overvalue random suited cards or a single, which are dealt relatively frequently. However, the odds that these hands will improve are much less frequent.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;i&gt;Probability of being dealt:&lt;/i&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/span&gt; &lt;span style=";font-family:Arial;font-size:100%;" &gt;• &lt;/span&gt; &lt;span style=";font-family:Arial;font-size:100%;" &gt;Any pocket pair: 16 to 1 (5.9%)&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/span&gt; &lt;span style=";font-family:Arial;font-size:100%;" &gt;• &lt;/span&gt; The players have equal &lt;a href="http://allthatspoker.blogspot.com/2009/05/poker-bankroll-management.html"&gt;bankrolls&lt;/a&gt;. As players lose their chips, the number of active tables is reduced by gathering multi-table survivors into one table. This will be repeated many times until there’s only one table left where the person who wins all the chips brings home the tourney prize.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;Objectives&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;When I first started to play multi-table, I was reckless. I had no strategy, no plan. I was over aggressive with sometimes marginal hands. Obviously I would bust out often.&lt;br /&gt;After having studied the game, read many books and reviewed millions of hands, I have come to the conclusion that if you have no set strategy, you are better off just saving your money and not even bother playing poker.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I have 3 objectives in MTTs:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;1) Make it to the money&lt;br /&gt;2) Make it to the final table (FT)&lt;br /&gt;3) &lt;a href="http://allthatspoker.blogspot.com/2009/05/poker-staking_18.html"&gt;Win&lt;/a&gt;!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Early in the game where a lot of unskilled people are playing, you must stick to your guns – but only with extremely good starting hands. For instance, in a no-limit Texas Hold'em MTT play the hand only if you have exceptionally playable starting hands. Do not wait to see too many flops early on. You’d just be depleting your bankroll much sooner in the tournament than you have to. Let your cards have a say on whether you’re playing or sitting out a hand. At this stage of the tournament, you are just trying to hold on to your chips. Furthermore, playing conservatively tells other tourney players that you only raise when you have extremely good cards and you fold when you know you’re beat. This reputation will come in handy later on.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In the middle stage of the tournament, when the number of players has been significantly depleted, it’s time to cash in on your tight-player reputation. You should start risking your chips, but not recklessly. At this stage, bluff for all you’re worth so you can increase your bankroll as rapidly as possible. However, be careful; you’re no longer playing with the ‘babes in the woods’ but with the ‘wolves’. Remember at this stage, you should try to win more chips YET retain your own chips.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;If you manage to get to the final table with a reasonably high stack of chips, that’s very good. Now, your goal is to win the tournament. Put all the pressure on. Pick on short-stacked players so that they can be out of the game much sooner. At this stage of the game, you should show a very aggressive playing style. However, do temper your propensity for terror tactics when dealing with players who have as high or even higher stack than you do.&lt;div class="blogger-post-footer"&gt;&lt;img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/6910999246907553891-6123111099990549403?l=allthatspoker.blogspot.com' alt='' /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;</content><link rel='replies' type='application/atom+xml' href='http://allthatspoker.blogspot.com/feeds/6123111099990549403/comments/default' title='Post Comments'/><link rel='replies' type='text/html' href='http://www.blogger.com/comment.g?blogID=6910999246907553891&amp;postID=6123111099990549403&amp;isPopup=true' title='0 Comments'/><link rel='edit' type='application/atom+xml' href='http://www.blogger.com/feeds/6910999246907553891/posts/default/6123111099990549403'/><link rel='self' type='application/atom+xml' href='http://www.blogger.com/feeds/6910999246907553891/posts/default/6123111099990549403'/><link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://allthatspoker.blogspot.com/2009/05/strategy-multi-table-mtt-tournaments-as.html' title='Multi-table (MTT) strategy'/><author><name>Poker Invest</name><uri>http://www.blogger.com/profile/06448107214341041070</uri><email>noreply@blogger.com</email><gd:image rel='http://schemas.google.com/g/2005#thumbnail' width='16' height='16' src='http://img2.blogblog.com/img/b16-rounded.gif'/></author><thr:total>0</thr:total></entry><entry><id>tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6910999246907553891.post-2985534713132328251</id><published>2009-05-16T08:55:00.000-07:00</published><updated>2009-05-21T07:44:34.916-07:00</updated><category scheme='http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#' term='smart'/><category scheme='http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#' term='training'/><category scheme='http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#' term='learning'/><category scheme='http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#' term='discipline'/><category scheme='http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#' term='high stakes poker'/><title type='text'>Help your game! It's a poker skill as surely as bluffing and game choice and starting hand selection. An adequate bankroll can compensate for a lot of weakness in a player's game, while an inadequate bankroll can (and usually will) often kill a player playing spectacularly.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;a href="http://www.pokerstars.com/?source=10176865"&gt;PokerStars.com&lt;/a&gt; your home for online poker. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;But some people have a pretty peculiar idea of what a "bankroll" is. Many players don't even have a bankroll. Microsoft's Bill Gates sometimes plays 3-6 in Las Vegas. It could be said that Bill is adequately bankrolled for that game, but more accurately, he has no poker bankroll. Bankroll is a non-issue for well-to-do players playing at a small or moderate limit. On the other hand, for purely professional players, bankroll is everything. It's like a truck to a truck driver. If you don't have one, you don't work (or you work for someone else). Bankroll is the issue for these players.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In between these two groups falls the mass of players, and here is where a poker "bankroll" starts to befuddle many people.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I have seen quite a few people refer to something called a "session bankroll", apparently the amount of money a player should put at risk in a certain game on a certain day. Others then also wonder how much they should buy-in to a game for (for instance, $100 for a 3-6 game). It's hard to come up with two less important strategy issues in all of poker!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;To winning or breakeven players with an adequate job for their lifestyle (meaning they don't absolutely need poker income to maintain their basic lifestyle), and to players who depend on poker for part of their income, how much money they put into action any particular day should be a reflection of decisions they've made based on the amount of money they have consciously deemed their overall poker bankroll. They should've already chosen to play at a limit where the results of any particular day have virtually zero ramifications to their overall bankroll -- as long as they have the sense to not turn a "day" or a "session" into a 54-hour hemorrhage-fest.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;If you are a winning or breakeven player, playing at a limit you are adequately bankrolled for, what you do on Tuesday is irrelevant. What you buy-in for also is irrelevant (as long as you always have enough chips in front of you to play each hand as it should be played). The dollars you are winning or losing that day should be irrelevant in your considerations of when to quit the game. What matters is playing correctly, here and now, in conjunction with a preconceived, sensible, overall strategy. To oversimplify it, this means: play good at a limit you can afford to play. The other considerations are not just trivial, they are giving in to superficial thinking, which reflects a flaw in your mental game. You must employ a &lt;a href="http://allthatspoker.blogspot.com/2009/05/discipline-in-poker.html"&gt;disciplined bankroll&lt;/a&gt; strategy.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;What about losing players? That's even easier. Losing players should bring to the casino exactly the amount of money they can afford to lose -- both on a dollar basis and a psychological one. And they should mentally put all that money on the table when they sit down. Buy-in for any amount more than the minimum needed to play each hand, but consider all your afford-to-lose money on the table -- no more, no less.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt; Bankroll issues are really more a function of personal circumstance than poker variance. So, what an adequate bankroll is for a winning or break even player with specific life responsibilities playing a specific game is another, more complex question. It's an important question. What is not important, as long as you exercise a microscopic amount of self-control, is how you do on any particular day. Expending brain cells to think about how much to risk on a day, or how much to sit at the table with (unless you are considering image issues), is missing the point of winning poker. Winning is all about what you do, and the reasons you do it. Forget the superficial and focus on the important.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;!-- BEGIN POKER SWAP BANNER EXCHANGE CODE --&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;center&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;SCRIPT LANGUAGE="JavaScript"&gt; &lt;br /&gt;banner = '&lt;TABLE CELLSPACING=0 CELLPADDING=0&gt;&lt;TR&gt;&lt;TD&gt;&lt;A HREF="http://www.pokerswap.com/cgi-bin/bp/bpwork2.cgi?advert=NonSSI&amp;page=01"&gt;'&lt;br /&gt;banner += '&lt;IMG SRC="http://www.pokerswap.com/cgi-bin/bp/bpwork2.cgi?ID=djbndb&amp;page=01" ALT="Poker Swap Banner Exchange" BORDER=0 width=468 height=60&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;/TD&gt;'&lt;br /&gt;banner += '&lt;/TR&gt;&lt;TR&gt;&lt;TD&gt;&lt;A HREF="http://pokerswap.com"&gt;&lt;IMG BORDER=0 SRC="http://pokerswap.com/pokerswapbar1.jpg" ALT="Poker Swap Banner Exchange"&gt;&lt;/A&gt;&lt;/TD&gt;&lt;/TR&gt;&lt;/TABLE&gt;'&lt;br /&gt;document.write(banner)&lt;br /&gt;// --&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/SCRIPT&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;NOSCRIPT&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;TABLE CELLSPACING=0 CELLPADDING=0&gt;&lt;TR&gt;&lt;TD&gt;&lt;A HREF="http://www.pokerswap.com/cgi-bin/bp/bpwork2.cgi?advert=NonSSI&amp;page=01"&gt;&lt;IMG SRC="http://www.pokerswap.com/cgi-bin/bp/bpwork2.cgi?ID=djbndb&amp;page=01" ALT="Poker Swap Banner Exchange" BORDER=0 width=468 height=60&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;/TD&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/TR&gt;&lt;TR&gt;&lt;TD&gt;&lt;A HREF="http://pokerswap.com"&gt;&lt;IMG BORDER=0 SRC="http://pokerswap.com/pokerswapbar1.jpg" ALT="Poker Swap Banner Exchange"&gt;&lt;/A&gt;&lt;/TD&gt;&lt;/TR&gt;&lt;/TABLE&gt;&lt;/NOSCRIPT&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/center&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;!-- END POKER SWAP BANNER EXCHANGE CODE --&gt;&lt;div class="blogger-post-footer"&gt;&lt;img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/6910999246907553891-6373184815618093184?l=allthatspoker.blogspot.com' alt='' /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;</content><link rel='replies' type='application/atom+xml' href='http://allthatspoker.blogspot.com/feeds/6373184815618093184/comments/default' title='Post Comments'/><link rel='replies' type='text/html' href='http://www.blogger.com/comment.g?blogID=6910999246907553891&amp;postID=6373184815618093184&amp;isPopup=true' title='1 Comments'/><link rel='edit' type='application/atom+xml' href='http://www.blogger.com/feeds/6910999246907553891/posts/default/6373184815618093184'/><link rel='self' type='application/atom+xml' href='http://www.blogger.com/feeds/6910999246907553891/posts/default/6373184815618093184'/><link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://allthatspoker.blogspot.com/2009/05/poker-bankroll-management.html' title='Poker Bankroll Management'/><author><name>Poker Invest</name><uri>http://www.blogger.com/profile/06448107214341041070</uri><email>noreply@blogger.com</email><gd:image rel='http://schemas.google.com/g/2005#thumbnail' width='16' height='16' src='http://img2.blogblog.com/img/b16-rounded.gif'/></author><thr:total>1</thr:total></entry><entry><id>tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6910999246907553891.post-6625752684347169363</id><published>2009-05-09T08:27:00.000-07:00</published><updated>2010-12-14T10:23:15.330-08:00</updated><category scheme='http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#' term='self control'/><category scheme='http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#' term='poker'/><category scheme='http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#' term='calm'/><category scheme='http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#' term='discipline'/><category scheme='http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#' term='zen'/><title type='text'>Discipline in Poker dammit!!!</title><content type='html'>&lt;a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_m57ggHQaxBE/TQe2CV7NzGI/AAAAAAAAAWA/9fimU3WYB3w/s1600/doigetamention.jpg"&gt;&lt;img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 89px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_m57ggHQaxBE/TQe2CV7NzGI/AAAAAAAAAWA/9fimU3WYB3w/s200/doigetamention.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5550605217118932066" /&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Discipline in poker is something that all players should have as one of their main assets. If your discipline is poor, you will lose at this game. There's no ifs and buts about it. If you lack discipline, no matter how many great starting hands you're getting, you will lose in the long run. As a poker player, you will know that there are few things in life as exciting as landing a great looking starting hand in Texas Holdem. Being dealt a good starting hand puts you in command right away and you feel excited about the possibility that you will go on and win the pot. &lt;p&gt;But unfortunately this excitement is probably responsible for more losing hands and leaving players with empty chip stacks than almost anything else in the game of poker because excitement means uncertainty.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Excitement at a poker table is normally a bad thing. When people get excited - and when I say people I mean poker players in this case - they usually make bad decisions. They allow their normal level of poker discipline to drop and make crazy, irrational moves that can cost a big pot or, worse still, their whole chip stack. &lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Discipline is all about making decisions and sticking to them. If you are a tight player, you need to decide what hands you will play and have the self discipline not to waver from your decision. The most important part of that is knowing when to lay your cards down, especially when they look very tempting and you are itching to stay in the hand to see what happens. &lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;It's as old as the hills but it's still as true today as it ever was; you need to know when to fold 'em. Even if you have a hand that looks like a monster, it can always be beaten and the bigger and better the starting hand, the harder it is to fold. &lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Dangerous starting hands that cause a lot of people to lose their &lt;a href="http://allthatspoker.blogspot.com/2009/05/poker-bankroll-management.html"&gt;poker discipline&lt;/a&gt; and cost them money are those such as A-10, A-9 or worse, Q-J, K-10. If you catch one of those in early position (that is when you are at the start of the betting) you should almost always fold them, there are just too many hands that can beat you. &lt;/p&gt;Although it's probably about the hardest to master, poker discipline is one of the key skills that marks out great poker players and sets them apart from the rest of the pack, so decide on your strategy and stick to it.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;When you sign up with Party Poker, use the BONUS CODE: &lt;span style="font-weight: bold; color: rgb(204, 0, 0);"&gt;DAVID500&lt;/span&gt; and get 100% Bonus deposit.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;a href="http://www.partypoker.com/td/new_table/03983_UK_usd_PP_NewTable_LP.htm?wm=3155788" target="_blank"&gt;&lt;img style="width: 404px; height: 60px;" src="http://banners.partypartners.com/images/marketing-materials/partypoker/english/gif/468x60/SuperSignupBonus/468x60_gif_SuperBonus.gif" alt="Gif Banners" border="0" /&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;a href="http://www.texasholdem-poker.com/"&gt;TexasHoldem-Poker.com&lt;/a&gt;&lt;div class="blogger-post-footer"&gt;&lt;img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/6910999246907553891-6625752684347169363?l=allthatspoker.blogspot.com' alt='' /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;</content><link rel='replies' type='application/atom+xml' href='http://allthatspoker.blogspot.com/feeds/6625752684347169363/comments/default' title='Post Comments'/><link rel='replies' type='text/html' href='http://www.blogger.com/comment.g?blogID=6910999246907553891&amp;postID=6625752684347169363&amp;isPopup=true' title='0 Comments'/><link rel='edit' type='application/atom+xml' href='http://www.blogger.com/feeds/6910999246907553891/posts/default/6625752684347169363'/><link rel='self' type='application/atom+xml' href='http://www.blogger.com/feeds/6910999246907553891/posts/default/6625752684347169363'/><link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://allthatspoker.blogspot.com/2009/05/discipline-in-poker.html' title='Discipline in Poker dammit!!!'/><author><name>Poker Invest</name><uri>http://www.blogger.com/profile/06448107214341041070</uri><email>noreply@blogger.com</email><gd:image rel='http://schemas.google.com/g/2005#thumbnail' width='16' height='16' src='http://img2.blogblog.com/img/b16-rounded.gif'/></author><media:thumbnail xmlns:media='http://search.yahoo.com/mrss/' url='http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_m57ggHQaxBE/TQe2CV7NzGI/AAAAAAAAAWA/9fimU3WYB3w/s72-c/doigetamention.jpg' height='72' width='72'/><thr:total>0</thr:total></entry></feed>
